Autumn Colors: Best Hiking Trails Around Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Rim Trail – South Lake Tahoe, CA

If you're looking for a trail that offers maximum variety and great views all around Lake Tahoe, then it's tough to top the Tahoe Rim Trail. This trail stretches for a whopping 165+ miles, wrapping all the way around Lake Tahoe and traveling through a wide range of terrain with varying difficulty levels. Most areas of the trail are open to hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian activities, so you can choose how you want to tackle this challenging, rewarding trail.

Mount Tallac Trails – South Lake Tahoe, CA

Of course, there are plenty of outstanding shorter trails around Lake Tahoe, as well. There are three Mount Tallac Trails to choose from when you visit, all offering some of the most sensational views that you'll find anywhere in Lake Tahoe. You can even climb all the way up to the summit, which tops out at just under 10,000 feet.

  • Floating Island Lake Trail
    This is the shortest and easiest hike of the three, with an easy-to-moderate difficulty rating and a length of 3.4 miles for a round-trip hike.

  • Cathedral Lake Trail
    Also rated as easy-to-moderate, the Cathedral Lake Trail is a bit longer than the Floating Island Trail, checking in at 5.0 miles for a round-trip hike.

  • Mount Tallac Trail
    The crown jewel of the three trails, the Mount Tallac Trail climbs all the way to the summit, around 3,300 feet above the trailhead. This trail is a bit more challenging than the first two, with a length of 10 miles round-trip that takes most hikers around 6 hours to traverse.

Eagles Lake Trail – South Lake Tahoe, CA

If you're new to hiking or new to the area, the Eagle Lake Trail is an excellent hike for getting acquainted with the natural scenery. It's a fairly easy hike that showcases amazing landscapes and takes most hikers around an hour from start to finish. The trail checks in at 1.8 miles in length, and its easier difficulty also makes it an excellent choice for a family hike.

Bayview Hiking Trail – South Lake Tahoe, CA

Address: Emerald Bay Rd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Up for a challenge? The Bayview Hiking Trail is the most challenging hike on our list, with a rating of difficult and plenty of steep climbs on the way to the top of Maggie's Peak. The higher you climb, the more the views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding scenery open up all around you. The trail stretches for 10.6 miles in total and features more than 2,300 feet of elevation gain.
